Unlocking Capacity for Just Relationships

Canadian Churches have been doing work over the years to attend to the brokenness in our history of unjust relationships with Indigenous people in Canada. More work is needed, and the work moves at a human pace. Yet, when we get stuck, be it from fear of taking the wrong step or ignorance of what else to do, we need the community to come together to build new capacity to unlock the next step.

On March 1, 2024, we invite you to join us for a creative session that will engage the practical, emotional, and theological places we get stuck in as we seek to build Just and Responsible relationships in the Canadian church that includes everyone. Whether you are generationally Canadian, a newcomer, Indigenous, or your ancestors who arrived from elsewhere, we want you to feel welcome in the conversation.

One way to get unstuck is to change your perspective. In the hope of cross-pollinating our ideas across networks, we invite you to use an interdisciplinary approach to share with us how you approach unlocking new capacity. This conversation will be interdisciplinary as we draw out the resources of academia, the church & para-church worlds, from the arts and family life.

Jodi Spargur

Jodi Spargur lives as a guest on the unceded Coast Salish Territory known as Vancouver. Jodi directs Red Clover Initiatives, a non-profit network that creates Indigenous-led local actions for healing and justice. Jodi is also a PhD. student with NAIITS: An Indigenous Learning Community whose dissertation is on land-based reparations in Canada and has a forthcoming book with New Leaf Press on the same topic.

Kimberlee Medicine Horn Jackson

Kimberlee Medicine Horn Jackson, Ihanktonwoan Nation, (Yankton Sioux) is originally from the White Swan community in Lake Andes, South Dakota. She is a faculty member with NAIITS: An Indigenous Learning Community, co-editor of the Journal of NAIITS and PhD Student with NAIITS. Kimberlee holds an MFA in Creative Writing in poetry and special attention to lyric creative non-fiction essay. Kimberlee blends both academic and creative writing to reach a wider audience in which to engage in Indigenous lived experiences to see what kind of a future we build together.

Mandi Hecht

Amanda (better known as “Mandi”) Hecht is a preacher in the prairie city of Saskatoon. She has been in pastoral ministry for over a decade. She earned a doctorate from Northern Seminary in New Testament Context, concentrating on the power of story in scripture. She loves to make the stories in the Bible come alive and loves the way that these stories can shape people’s thoughts and (hopefully) lives. She is married with three children ranging from university age to grade eight; and she shares her home with a revolving door of cats. She takes her coffee black, if anyone is interested.

Josh Wallace

Josh Wallace is a church planter and educator in Saskatoon in Treaty 6 Territory. He pastors within the Mennonite Church Saskatchewan family of congregations and teaches in Religion & Culture at St Thomas More College.
