The first episode of a special series for lent is here!
We’re excited to collaborate with FMCiC’s Jason Tripp and Adam Kline in inviting you to participate in Movies for Lent: Conversations at the Intersection of Faith & Film. Jason and Adam, pastors and movie-lovers, host a weekly watch experience through this season that digs into the themes of Lent as seen through the lenses of some of their favourite films.
You can participate in the live watch experience and discussion on Wednesdays over zoom (join the Movies for Lent facebook group for more info), or participate on your own by using these podcast episodes as a jumping-off point for reflection or discussion in your own communities.
This first week’s selection is Arrival (2016).
Theme: Mortality
Lectionary Scripture: Matthew 6:19-21
Discussion Questions:
When the credits rolled, what was your immediate thought or reaction to the film?
Think about the film artistically. From the performances to the production, what elements did you appreciate or thought missed the mark?
Arrival is a film with a multiplicity of themes. In addition to time and mortality, what other storylines left an impression on you?
In the lectionary passage Jesus says, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What variety of “treasures” (good or bad) did you see characters fighting to preserve or protect throughout the film?
